Key to making VPN Client work on Windows 8

By | October 29, 2013

If you’re trying to connect with Cisco VPN Client on Windows 8, you may get an error message like this:

Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client.
Reason 442: Failed to enable Virtual Adapter.

If this happens, check the following key in the Windows registry:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>Services>CVirtA

The value for this key should be similar to this following:

Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64bit Windows

If there’s extra text to the left of that text, back up the registry and delete the extra text in this key.

Check for this common mistake if you have trouble connecting to ASDM

To connect to ASDM remotely, you need to enable the HTTPS server and configure it to allow access from a given host. The command to allow a given host access (in this case, 192.168.1.2) is the following:

   http 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.255 inside

One easy mistake to make, however, is to mix up the IP addresses and instead put the one for the server hosting ASDM. So if you have trouble connecting, check this command in your configuration to ensure that the IP address matches the one you’re using from the client side.
