Cisco Tip: Resetting Cisco Router Password

By | January 9, 2013

So you came to the office  after Christmas break, you needed to change something on the router and this happens…

Router>enable

Password:

Password:

Password:

% Bad secrets

First thing first, STAY CALM and DON’T PANIC. All you need to do is this command….

Router>show version

Note the number you have for example:              Configuration register is 0x2102

Now switch off the router and switch on again then break the boot up process “Ctrl+Break”. That will take you to the “rommon” mode, it is like a mini OS to control the ROM in the router. After that its simple…

rommon 1 > confreg 0x2142

rommon 2 > reset

This will load your router WITHOUT any start-up configuration. Then do the following

Router>

Router>enable

Router#copy startup-config running-config

Router#

Router#configure terminal

Router(config)#enable secret < password >

Router(config)#^Z

Router#copy running-config startup-config

Router#show version

Router#configure terminal

Router(config)#config-register 0x2102

Configuration register is 0x2142 (will be 0x2102 at next reload)

Router(config)#^Z

Router#

Now you are ready to rock and roll again!
